January to June 2021: Gather, Learn, Act.

The faculty of the Koinonia School of Race and Justice invites you to participate in a six-month experiential program from January to June 2021.

Gathering

Ultimately, it is the joy of one another’s shared humanity that gives us the fuel–the impetus–to stay the course. While we plan to do some hard work, we also plan to enjoy one another’s company. Initially, we will meet virtually to share life stories and bond with one another. The hope is that our increased love for one another, a love that can grow through the simple enjoyment of life’s gifts, will make our learning and acting all the more authentic. By building community together and supporting one another’s self-care, we will inspire and encourage each other to learn, act, and grow. As permitted later in the spring, we will gather in person around things that bring us joy: music, food, dance, art and other recreational activities.

If the majority knew of the root of this evil, then the road to its cure would not be long. — Albert Einstein

Learning

Albert Einstein recognized our need to understand the origins of the corruptions around us. His quote above implies that an understanding of these origins is the first step to eradicating evil. To that end, through learning and discussion, our cohort will gain collective insight about the roots of racial systemic injustice and our own disbelief. As Baldwin implies above, for some, accepting the truth is the first battle to be waged. But with the hope that on the other side of truth lies our communal freedom, we will pursue truths easy and hard together.

…even if I should speak, no one would believe me. And they would not believe me precisely because they would know that what I said was true. — James Baldwin

Acting

To actualize what we’ve learned, we will engage in ways that make a difference in the world. Through social action, community involvement, advocacy, and support of Black-benefiting organizations in our area we will act. Einstein also said that no problem can be solved with the same consciousness that caused it. Our hope is that by raising our awareness, we will be inspired to find creative ways to bring about change and healing. We will act individually supported by one another, and collectively, encouraged by our common love for social justice and equity.

The semester will intentionally provide opportunities for a cohort of 15-20 to gather as a community to care for one another, learn more about our complex racial history, and act in ways that move us toward a better future.

“If you abide in my word then you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free” — John 8:31-32
